Controlling Ice & Snow
De-icers lower the melting point of ice, which helps remove snow and ice from pavement. Sodium chloride (rock salt) is the most common product because it’s effective and inexpensive. However, it is highly corrosive and ecologically damaging.
Some de-icers have a significant amount of phosphorous. Be sure to keep the de-icer in a covered area to prevent runoff to the storm system and contamination of ground water. Always apply de-icing products according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Consider using the old-fashioned approach, a shovel, which eliminates the risk of harmful chemicals, and saves you a trip to the gym!
